Süd-Chemie develops specially formulated desiccant sheets

Belen, New Mexico – Süd-Chemie Performance Packaging has developed Desi-Sheet™ flat desiccants designed to protect packaged goods from moisture, while economizing precious space.

Moisture can quickly affect the value or even destroy many types of valuable goods causing microbial activity, chemical degradation, rust, corrosion, mold or device malfunction. By sealing goods inside packaging with the appropriate desiccant, goods can be protected from moisture and maintain long shelf lives.

Because of the need to reduce package materials or to optimize shipping and merchandising, packaging of many products almost always requires careful utilization of internal space. With thickness ranging from 0.3 mm to 5 mm, Desi-Sheet flat desiccants can be placed inside product packaging without the bulkiness of desiccant bags or sachets. Furthermore, because of their flexibility, they can conform to the package configuration itself, such as corners, steps and circular tubes.

Unlike other flat desiccants on the market, Desi-Sheet does not contain calcium chloride, which can corrode the very products the desiccant is meant to protect. Some other flat desiccants on the market use high amounts of polymer binders to form a sheet, which sacrifices desiccation capacity and the rate of adsorption. The Desi-Sheet technology can incorporate bentonite, a non-corrosive, natural desiccant, as well as other types of desiccants to provide the desired package conditions.

“Desi-Sheet is a unique desiccant that provides the same level of performance as a traditional desiccant bag without sacrificing space or risking corrosion damage,” says Amol Kirtikar, global business development manager at Süd-Chemie Performance Packaging. “It offers all needed desiccant functionalities for a myriad of products, including flexibility, compactness and adsorption.”

Ideal packaging applications for flat desiccants include consumer electronics, printed circuit boards, semiconductors, pharmaceutical blister packaging and diagnostic test kits. Desi-Sheet complies with relevant sections of 21 CFR for direct contact with food and drugs and is compliant with JEDEC standards for dry packing of semiconductors.

Desi-Sheet desiccants are fully customizable to package dimensions and can include adhesive backing to adhere to undersides of lids or to carton walls.
